Day 5 (August 22, 2026): Liege


Get ready to see our day in Liege! An amazingly modern train station, churches galore, and a river runs through it all. This city of about 220,000 is a wee bit scruffier than Antwerp and Brussels, but it has a charm of its own. 

Belgium was battling a huge forest fire 40km from Liege last week, so we were concerned the fire (or at least the smoke) would interfere with our visit. But the rains have all but doused the fire, and everything was fine on that front. 

We arrived in Liege just after 9:30AM and left again on a 4:15PM train. Having walked 13KM, we were pretty tired. We opted for Uber Eats and enjoyed a dinner of pasta in our room but had a night cap of decaf lattes in the hotel bar.

374 steps link the city and the former citadel. It was not an easy climb!

Did we need another Summer 2026 vacation? Absolutely not.  But hey, we are partially retired, and this week-long trip to Belgium is exactly the sort of thing we envisioned for retirement. Plus, who can resist a new Air Canada nonstop route from Halifax to Brussels?  Pam has never visited Belgium, and I only visited the country once, as part of a one-day pilgrimage in 1998, when I worked at Veterans Affairs Canada. A Canadian Lancaster Bomber was found in a bog in Gerardsbergen in southern Belgium in the 1990s, with its five deceased service-men still in the wreckage. The pilgrimage was to carry out a state funeral for these men. Belgium is known for its chocolate, waffles, and Brussels sprouts, among many other things. As the seat of the European Parliament and having such cultural gems as Brugge, it is a country we have wanted to explore for a long time. Day 4 (August 21, 2026): Brussels

Today was our ‘big Brussels day’!  At 1.25 million people, Brussels is a huge city and is the heartbeat of Belgium on many level, from politics to culture to infrastructure.  We set out this morning with one full day to take a bit out of Brussels’ key sights. A lack of sleep and the five hour time difference from Halifax caught up on us this morning. We had hoped to be out the door at 8:30AM, but it was actually 10:30AM when we closed the hotel room door and set out. We walked quickly, lingered a little less than planned, skipped one planned museum tour, and somehow, we got in everything we had hoped to. In brief, we  concentrated on the historic centre, the Royal/Sablon areas, and made a trip outside the city centre to the Expo 1958 site to see something more modern - Atomium. Day 3 (August 20, 2026): Antwerp

This was our first day testing out our “hub and spoke” approach to touring Belgium. And it worked beautifully! After a wonderful breakfast at the hotel, we left for the nearby station to get our train to Antwerp. We purchased the SNCB Trani+ card, which gives us 40% off fares from 9AM to 4PM and after 6PM. Train+ makes getting around Belgium very inexpensive. Anyway, the trains run like clockwork here. We got the 9:05AM train and pulled into Antwerp at 10:07, on time to the minute!  After exploring the station, which is a destination in itself, we set off for the northern end of the city, working our way southwards through Antwerp’s truly impressive sights. We got the 3:54PM train back to Brussels, feeling so happy that it didn’t rain and that we had enjoyed Antwerp so much.  Back in Brussels, the blue skies continued.
